Moog Little Phatty

The Moog Little Phatty Stage ii is an analog synthesizer with digital control.
Like its predecessor the Little Phatty Stage i, the newest member of the Little Phatty family is modelled on the the larger and more expensive Mini Moog Voyager.

The Moog Little Phatty was in fact the last synthesizer that Bob Moog, the father of modern synthesizers, had direct input on. It was his inspiration to create a synthesizer package that had all the classic Moog sound, but at a more affordable price.

The Moog Little Phatty stage ii keeps the very best Moog features, which are easily the oscillators and filter system, to ensure that distinctive Moog sound remains.

The two ultra stable voltage controlled oscillators and voltage controlled filter not only help generate genuine moog sound but the 100% analog signed paths means that the performer is always in control during those solo breaks.
The original filter system borrowed from the Mini Moog Voyager helps create an amazing range of sounds.
The overload control enables you to add harmonic distortion to the filter so you can go from typical synthesizer clean tones to a richer, thicker more harmonic sound.

The Moog Little Phatty Stage ii retains most of the original Little Phatty features such as 37 note keyboard, a batch of presets and direct interface with the analog circuitry via knobs on the central panel.
Most importantly, it retains that amazing Moog sound. So what makes the new version of the Little Phatty different from the first?

New Moog Little Phatty Stage ii Features

Apart from a new stylish black finish, the latest Moog Little Phatty has some pretty useful new features including:

  • Full Midi Controller
  • Midi over USB
  • Midi clock sync
  • An Arpeggiator
  • Tap Tempo
  • VST Plugin Editor

The arpeggiator and LFO are synced to a drum machine which provides the midi clock .
When the drum machine changes tempo, the Little Phatty Stage ii follows perfectly.

The VST plugin editor allows you to work with software like via USB, if that’s your thing.

The Moog Little Phatty Stage ii can be used as a contoller for most soft synthesizers that accept normal MIDI’s.

Summary

Having “borrowed” a LP Stage ii for a test drive, I’d summarise my experience as follows;

The analog sounds you can create with the Little Phatty ii, are simply fantastic.
Yes it takes a little while to get used to but so does any new instrument and the Little Phatty Stage ii is certainly a serious instrument.

The sound it creates is honestly better than synthesizers I have played that cost 3-4 times the price.

Did Bob Moog achieve his goal of offering access to pure Moog sound at a relatively modest price?
I think definitely so.

It’s intuitive and a whole lot of fun.

Is it the perfect first synthesizer for a beginner? Perhaps not.
Experienced synth players will find it very easy to pick up and run with but newbies are possibly better off starting with something easier, like the Korg Kaossilator Pro or may be Microkorg.

I’m more of a hardware fan than a software fan when it comes to music,
but for those with a passion for both, this could be the perfect synth for you.
The Moog Little Phatty has enough knobs to play with to have some fun and impress a live audience.
At the same time, you can access all the software support you need for that perfect new sound.
