The Korg Kaossilator Pro is the new suped up version of the very popular palm sized Kaossilator from Korg. The first thing you notice when you take it out of its box is its weight, thanks to solid metal construction.
Straight away you get the feeling that this unit is no toy but a power machine waiting to be unleashed. In this respect, it is a lot more like the larger Korg KP3 than the Kaoss Pro’s smaller predecessor.
The Kaossilator Pro is definitely packed with features designed to attract both performer and composer alike. In this review, we will single out some of these key features and explore what they really mean in terms of user experience.
We will also highlight some negatives associated with the product that our research uncovered. Hopefully this review will help you decide whether this is the right instrument for you or not.

- 6. Vocoder programs for vocal effects

- 1. Kaoss X-Y touch pad
The larger, back light KAOSS X-Y touchpad is extremely responsive and intuitive, allowing spontanoeus changes and complexity at a touch of a finger. Horizontal motions control the pitch, while the vertical axis can control
tone parameters such as cut off, feedback or modulation depth.
The 4 independent loop locations make it incredibly easy for anyone, no matter how experienced or musical, to create entirely original sounds and complex musical phrases. It also makes for a hell of a lot of fun.
- 2. Dedicated real time control buttons
The dedicated real time control buttons are nice and chunky which is handy if you,re DJ-ing in some dark corner of the room. A dedicated volume knob for the currently selected program also allows you to adjust the volume after
the loop is recorded.
Other real time controls allow you to change the scale of the unit, the key and the tempo. This all makes for a very hands on, in control kind of eperience. And a lot of fun.
- 3. 200 sounds built in
The Korg Kaossilator Pro also has 200 on board sounds covering cool synthesizer sounds such as lead and bass as well as more diverse acoustic sounds from trumpet to piano and beyond.
- 4. Instant access to 8 of your favourite sounds
You also have the ability to instantly access up to 8 of your favourite sounds via program memory buttons, which can save quite a bit of time.
- 5. PCM samples that provide dramatic drum kits and percussion patternsThe onboard PCM samples provide thumping drum kits and great percussion patterns
- 6. Thers is also a bank of vocoder sounds for fantastic vocal effects
- 7. Usb Connectivity with your computer and SD card memory storage
The fact that you can save and load sounds onto your SD card is extremely useful as it allows you to easily incorporate them into your set. The only downside here is that saving and downloading is in real time which seems
very slow to an impatient person like myself.
- 8. Dedicated input level
Dedicated input levels allow you to blend in the amount of incoming audio which comes via either line input or the dedicated microphone. This is very useful beacuse you can record external audio into any of the loop banks as well as the onboard synth engine. You can over dub providing another sound source
Additionally, midi input and output ports enable the unit to both receive andtransmit midi data. Unfortunately however, the Kaossilator Pro doesn’t respond to note data from a midi keyboard.
There is a get around wherby you can map notes in logic but what you are really doing here is converting notes into controller data. The abilty to work directly with note data would in my opinion take the Kaoss Pro to another level again.
Summing Up The Korg Kaossilator Pro
That said and everything else considered, The Korg Kaossilator Pro is a serious musical instrument for both performing and premium recording. It is hard not to be impressed by just how much punch Korg have packed into such a portable unit. Its featues allow for plenty of creative complexity but at the same time, it is so easy to use. Great for beginners and seasoned pros alike. Oh, did I mention, it’s a hell of a lot of fun too.
